Copiague Middle School Students Get Lessons On Fire Safety

In recognition of Fire Prevention Month, Copiague Middle School students welcomed members of the Copiague Fire Department and Chief Orlando on Oct. 16 for an engaging and informative presentation focused on fire prevention, emergency preparedness and community involvement.
Firefighters began the visit by reviewing important practices and encouraging students to make safety a priority at home and in their daily lives. They then discussed the growing dangers associated with lithium-ion batteries, explaining how battery malfunctions can quickly ignite and spread fires. Students learned about proper battery handling, charging practices and the importance of recognizing potential hazards.
To give students a firsthand look at the tools used in emergency situations, firefighters passed around an infrared heat detector and explained how the device helps crews locate heat sources and navigate challenging environments during emergencies. Students were able to see what the first responders look like in full protective firefighting gear when responding to emergencies and learned how the equipment protects them while on the job.
In addition to these precautions, the department introduced students to its Junior Cadet Program and encouraged those interested in public service and emergency response to become involved. Firefighters explained how the program provides young people with opportunities to learn about the fire service, leadership and teamwork, offering them a way to support the safety of their community.
