About Us

The Copiague Public School District is composed of a multicultural population of approximately 5,000 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. The school system consists of four elementary schools, one middle school for grades six through eight, and one high school for grades nine through twelve. Copiague Public School District prides itself on its ability to offer quality educational programs.

Within the culturally and ethnically diverse community that is Copiague, the public schools occupy a unique position. It is our responsibility, in partnership with parents and the community, to enable every student to reach high levels of individual academic achievement, to acquire the sophisticated skills necessary for life and work, and to become informed, concerned citizens of a rapidly changing, interdependent society.

DISTRICT PRIORITIES

“To maintain and enhance stability and opportunities for children”

    • Synthesize the actions of the NYSED and Board of Regents Transformational Vision for Graduation Measures, provide stakeholder feedback, and begin the planning process for adherence to the approved roll-out plan.
    • Finalize spending of all ARP funds and complete final program evaluation and sustainability reports required by the NYSED.
    • Increase the district’s K-8 implementation of the data-driven instructional platform, iReady Math and Reading.
    • Continue the district’s efforts to expand our K-6 literacy curriculum to include the key elements prescribed by the research behind the Science of Reading.
    • Develop our High School business education program to include opportunities for exposure to Personal Finance and Computer Science standards, community-based college and career partnerships, and career awareness education.
    • Continue the work of collaborating with local Community-Based Organizations that deliver our district’s UPK program.
    • Continue to evaluate and increase opportunities for students to take part in career-related activities, including expanded partnerships with local organizations, the Electrical Training Center of Copiague, and the Suffolk County Department of Labor
    • Consistently review cash flow projections and determine if short-term borrowing is needed.
    • Project year-end fund balance through careful monitoring of revenue and expenditures throughout the year.
    • Ensure District spending complies with New York State and Federal Education Law, and District policies.
    • Invest District funds to maximize Interest Income through careful monitoring of appropriate investment opportunities.
    • Utilize template created by ASBO to create a Federal Funds Procedure Manual to ensure spending complies with the guidelines established by the Federal Government.
    • Work with architect to review and update the District’s Capital Improvement Plan and spending projections incorporating changes in scope and cost.

     

    • Negotiate successor agreement to the current: Copiague Teachers Association and the Copiague Non-Supervisory Services Unit (FT Custodial Unit).
    • Provide additional training and support for supervisors to enhance management skills of non-instructional staff.
    • Provide staff with legal updates and training opportunities as it pertains to new NYS-mandated reporter obligations as well as mental health awareness for students.
    • Continue to expand our relationship with colleges and universities to encourage student teaching/student intern candidates to seek field-work experiences for SWD/Mathematics and SWD/Science; ESL and bilingual with the district
    • Implement a district-wide lockdown system, including the addition of flashing blue lights, strategically placed activation buttons and an integrated PA system announcement.
    • Replacement of existing exterior door card access system for the district, including a new software program for card readers and the addition of new exterior card access readers at specific locations.
    • Establishment of behavioral threat assessment teams as per new NYSED guidelines.
    • Continuation of Stop the Bleed training program for all staff and CPI training for all security staff.

     

    • Continue to improve upon the district’s Virtual Home Instruction Program, ensuring that our students participating receive a rich academic experience, while continuing to lower the overall cost of home instruction for the district.
    • Work to increase the number of scholarship offerings for graduating seniors through partnership with local organizations as well as Copiague alumni members.
    • Through Copiague’s partnership with Northwell Health the district will look to increase social-emotional support and the availability of outside mental health resources for our students.
    • Work with students suspended for drug or alcohol offenses to use restorative discipline to decrease lengths of suspension when students agree to partake in preventative counseling sessions.
    • Continue to enhance opportunities for high school special education students through the continuation of work-based learning opportunities and partnership with government agencies.
    • Continue the process of returning additional students to district-based special education programs.
    • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations regarding students’ annual IEP reviews, re-evaluation procedures and periodic program updates.
    • Continue to implement actions outlined in our Cybersecurity Information Security Policies and Procedures.
    • Evaluate and refine our district’s professional development plan for instructional technology and cybersecurity.
    • Work with the members of the district Technology Committee to update and refresh our expiring District Technology Plan.
    • Work collaboratively with administrators and teachers to address the implications of Artificial Intelligence tools in daily instruction, and the practice of teaching and learning.
    • Seamlessly migrate the district website to the new platform.
    • Reach out to community and school groups to highlight district budget, programs and events.
    • Maintain relationships with State and Federal Legislators to advocate for the district's needs.
    • Continue “Pizza & Conversation” with the Board and high school students.
