Cultural Dance Class Brings Hispanic Heritage To Life

Students from the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Cultural Dance class shared their knowledge and appreciation of Hispanic heritage with students in grades 3-5 at all four of the district’s elementary schools through a special educational presentation in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month on Oct. 14.
The presentation introduced elementary students to the rich cultures and traditions of Hispanic communities through engaging, interactive activities. The younger students explored popular Hispanic foods, learned about different regions and their unique cultural traditions, and discovered the contributions of influential Latino figures who have made a lasting impact on history and society.
The program also gave elementary students a chance to share their opinions by voting for some of their favorite Hispanic foods. The presentation concluded with an interactive salsa dance lesson, giving them the opportunity to experience music and movement firsthand.
Through this student-led program, high schoolers are building connections with younger learners while helping them celebrate the diversity, history and cultural contributions of Hispanic communities.
