Copiague Middle School and Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School opened their doors to welcome incoming sixth and ninth grade students during orientation programs designed to help them confidently transition to their new schools.

The orientation programs provided students with an opportunity to become familiar with their new surroundings, meet teachers and staff, connect with classmates and learn about the routines and expectations that will help them get off to a successful start.

At Copiague Middle School, incoming sixth graders received their class schedules and met with their teachers while touring the building on Aug. 31. Students practiced navigating their schedules, locating their classrooms and learning how to use their lockers. The orientation also gave students a chance to meet new classmates and begin building friendships before the start of the school year.

At Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School, members of the Class of 2029 were welcomed to the high school during ninth grade orientation on Aug. 27. Principal Joseph Agosta greeted the incoming freshmen and shared important information about school policies, procedures and expectations. Students then divided into small groups and toured the building alongside student ambassadors, who helped introduce ninth graders to their new school and answer questions about life as a high school student.

During orientation, freshmen visited their classrooms, practiced opening and using their lockers and had opportunities to connect with both new and familiar classmates. The student ambassadors played an important role throughout the day, offering firsthand insight and helping incoming students feel more comfortable as they prepared to begin their high school experience.

Beyond learning where to go and what to expect, the orientation programs were designed to help students feel a sense of belonging from the moment they walked through the doors. By providing students with time to explore their schools, ask questions and make connections, Copiague School District is helping ease the transition into two important new chapters of their educational journeys.
