Spring Athletes Celebrate Success

Copiague School District held its annual Spring Sports Awards to honor the accomplishments of its student-athletes both on and off the field on June 2. Sponsored by the Copiague Booster Club, spring coaches, administrators, Board of Education members, friends and family gathered to share the successes of the varsity softball, girls lacrosse, girls flag football, girls track, boys lacrosse, baseball and boys track teams.
Coaches recognized and celebrated the student-athletes for both their individual and team achievements during the season. They distributed individual awards, including the Coach’s Award, Most Improved and the MVP Award.
Acknowledging their hard work and achievements in the classroom, the Golden Eagle Awards were presented to a member from each team with the highest cumulative grade point average. This year’s recipients were Kaydee Bonilla (girls lacrosse); Bielka Perez (girls track); Jonathan Valle (boys track); Cesar Fermin Jr. (baseball); Mason Koziarz (boys lacrosse); Olivia Tyszko (girls flag football) and Bella Bartoli (softball).
Additionally, three memorial awards were presented to deserving athletes. Jeremy Clase received the Daniel O’Connell Memorial Baseball Award. The Jarred J. Pennington Memorial Lacrosse Award was presented to Richard Garcia and Bryan Marmolejos received the Sean Ryan Noonan Memorial Lacrosse Award.
Five students – Esmeralda Claros Sanchez, Jonathan Valle, Alyson Tenebro, Emma Luvera and Leilani Taro – were named Gold Key winners. The Gold Key Award is the highest honor in Section XI that an athlete can receive for sports participation. It is awarded to student-athletes who letter in eight junior varsity or varsity seasons in grades 10-12.
