Copiague Middle School Scientists Explore Nature

Seventh and eighth graders from Copiague Middle School’s Independent Science Research class recently ventured on a field trip to Sunken Meadow State Park. The class engaged in a memorable outdoor adventure that included bird watching, invasive species identification and ocean life exploration. The students identified bird species, learned about the impact of invasive plants on local ecosystems and participated in a seining activity, where they caught a diverse array of aquatic creatures in nets along Sunken Meadow Creek. Following their hands-on learning experiences, the group reflected on the day’s discoveries which deepened their connection to the natural environment. This trip not only enhanced their scientific understanding but also fostered teamwork and a lasting appreciation for nature.
