First Graders Show Off Their Love of Literacy

First graders at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School have been working hard on their literacy assignments.
In Caren Steiger’s class, students recently completed an author study of Mo Willems. After learning about his different characters and how they cross over into other books, they crafted their own out of paper and popsicle sticks. They used these creations to retell the stories in their own words.
Students in Danielle Rizzo’s class have been learning about Groundhog Day and what it means when the groundhog sees its shadow. They read books about the tradition and then labeled the parts of a groundhog on a picture.
In Kaitlyn Hennelly’s class, first graders recently began their Black History Month studies by reading books from different Black authors. After reading “Layla’s Happiness” as a class, students brainstormed ideas and wrote about what gives them joy.
