‘Snow’ Much Learning at Susan E. Wiley

Despite the lack of snowfall so far this winter, first graders at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School still got to experience the magic of winter with an indoor snow day on Jan. 31.
As part of the cross-curricular lesson, first graders wrote about the characteristics of snow and then created their own homemade versions. They even used shaving cream “snow” to practice their handwriting.
Students also participated in an indoor “snowball toss.” First, they each wrote down a quality that makes them special on a piece of paper and crumpled it up. The students then tossed the papers across the room, where their friends could catch and read them.
As a final activity, the first graders created a snow globe full of math facts and completed a “snowstorm in a jar” science experiment.
