Fifth Graders Present a New Twist on Classic Fairytales
The fifth graders in Deniz Harned’s class at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School shared their creative journey of writing fractured fairytales by presenting their stories to the class on Jan. 9. The project allowed students to unleash their imaginations while also developing important narrative writing skills.
Before they began the writing process, students created outlines for their fresh interpretations of well-known tales. This step helped them to organize their ideas and plan engaging and original twists. The outlines also detailed the stories’ characters, setting, problem, solution and plot.
To bring their visions to life, students learned how to use Canva, an online graphic design tool. They created eye-catching covers and illustrations that perfectly captured the unique twists they put on classic fairytales.
The final stage involved walking through the editing process with Ms. Harned. Students received helpful feedback and guidance to help polish the stories. With Ms. Harned’s support, the class enhanced their writing skills and created pieces they were proud to present to their classmates.
