Student-Scientists Observe Closed-System Reactions

As part of a recent hands-on science lesson, fifth graders in Ms. Maroney’s class at Great Neck Road Elementary School learned about the structure and properties of matter. Using a plastic bag, water and an antacid tablet, students observed what happened when two substances were mixed in a closed system. Using three different bags – one with a whole tablet, one broken into four pieces and the last into many small pieces – the students observed the different reactions happening inside and whether a new substance was formed. They timed the different reactions in the various bags and determined that the particle size of the tablet effected the reaction and its time.
