On March 14, Deauville Gardens East Elementary School held a second literacy night for students in grades three through five. Students and their families gathered in the gym, and listened to Principal Mr. Buccello read aloud the “Word Collector” by Peter H. Reynolds. School counselor Mrs. Mullady, dressed as Jerome, the story’s main character, acted out the story as it was being read aloud.

Afterward, students moved to their classrooms to participate in glow in the dark activities. Each student received a glow stick upon arrival. Third graders played Scrabble with floor-sized pieces and worked together to unscramble sentences. Fourth and fifth graders had a synonym scavenger hunt. They each were given a list of words. The synonyms for their word list were written in invisible ink and posted around the room. Students used a black light pen to find the matching synonym and record it on their paper.

Fourth and fifth graders also made a fortune teller with comprehension prompts to use when reading. All students wrote a word that tells about themselves to add to the school’s “Word Collector” display. All students went home with two books, a copy of the “Word Collector” and a second book of their choice.
