STEM Lesson Goes Round and Round

Fifth graders in Ms. Harned’s class at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School recently combined a literacy lesson with a STEM-based activity that went round and round. As a class, the students read, “Mr. Ferris and his Wheel,” a biography about how the Ferris wheel was invented. Working in pairs, the students were then tasked with creating their own freestanding Ferris wheel. Some of the materials they could use included paper plates, pipe cleaners, straws, Popsicle sticks, Play-Doh and tape. The students sketched their designs and then went to work creating a wheel. For an added bonus, the students tried to get their wheels to spin.
