Literacy Glows at Deauville Gardens East

Copiague’s Deauville Gardens East Elementary School was aglow with knowledge on Feb. 7 during its glow-themed literacy night for students in kindergarten through second grade. Students and their families gathered in the gym to hear “The Word Collector” by Peter H. Reynolds read aloud by their Principal Joseph Buccello. Families then moved to classrooms to participate in fun glow-in-the-dark literacy activities. Kindergartners and first graders played hopscotch under the black lights and created a glow-in-the-dark craft. Second graders played floor-sized Scrabble and worked in teams to unscramble sentences. All students also wrote and illustrated a word that tells who they are to add to a Deauville Gardens East Word Collectors hallway display. Every student received a copy of “The Word Collector” and a second book of their choice to take home.
