Students in Ms. Sudano’s second grade class at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School had a Grinch week to focus on kindness in December. The class listened to “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” and completed a story and character map. They then discussed how characters changed in stories and learned about antonyms.

Students wrote organized paragraphs to explain how they would make the Grinch smile. As part of a cross-curricular lesson, the students worked in small groups for a hands-on STEM experiment to make the Grinch’s heart grow three sizes. Using a green balloon with a heart filled with baking soda, they dropped the baking soda into water bottle with vinegar and watched as the balloon filled with air.
