Copiague Teacher Chosen for Fellowship

Copiague Middle School social studies chairperson and teacher Allison Weller is one of 15 teachers in the country selected for the Genocide Education Fellowship to Armenia this summer.

The group of teachers will embark on a 10-day intensive professional development program in Armenia in July 2022, based at the Armenian Genocide Museum and Institute. Upon their return to the U.S., the teachers will carry out their professional development activities for other teachers.

AGMI scholars will speak to the teacher fellows on topics of research there, including the memorialization of genocide,exemplified by the Armenian Genocide Monumentadjacent to the AGMI facility, where teachers will engage in morning workshops and gaininsight into the museum’s operations, artifacts and historical materials.

Ms. Weller is an active member of numerous professional organizations and has presented at the annual conferences of the National Council for the Social Studies and the New York State Council for the Social Studies’ Human Rights Committee, where she currently serves as the vice president of policy and administration and on the Human Rights Committee.
