Savvy Spenders at Susan E. Wiley

April is Financial Literacy month and the fifth graders in Ms. Gianinni’s class at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School are learning how to be financially literate.

Throughout April, the class has been learning about budgeting, money and how to manage finances. The class discussing budgeting and categorizing finances into save, give and spend. They made a tree map to determine different ways and reasons for spending, saving and donating their money. Each student was given a bank with three compartments for the different categories. The banks were donated by Benjamin Talks.

The students in Ms. Gianinni’s class have the opportunity to earn play money based on their participation and engagement each school day. With their new banks, the students will prioritize where they spend their money for the remainder of the school year.
