Judge Inspires Students With Lessons In Leadership, Perseverance

On May 29, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School students enrolled in You and the Law and Advanced Placement United States Government and Politics classes heard from Federal Judge Bianco and his career path during a special assembly.
Judge Bianco, who currently serves as a United States Circuit Judge for the Second Circuit, shared his professional experiences, personal journey and insight into the federal judicial system. He provided students with an overview of the judicial branch and explained the process by which federal judges are selected and appointed. Through an interactive presentation, students explored the roles of the president, Senate and judiciary by taking on each position and gaining a deeper understanding of the checks and balances that shape the nation’s government.
In addition to discussing the structure of the court system, Judge Bianco shared his own path to success, including the challenges he faced while attending law school. He encouraged students to pursue their goals despite uncertainty, emphasizing how fear can pose a barrier to achievement. His message about perseverance and believing in oneself resonated with students.
Judge Bianco also gave students a glimpse into the wide range of cases that come before the courts, sharing examples from his experience overseeing complex legal matters. His discussion helped students see the real-world impact of the concepts they study in their classrooms, broadening their horizons to the diverse pathways in the field of law.
