Hands-On Learning Plants The Seeds Of Sustainability

Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Advanced Placement Human Geography students spent several mornings this spring learning beyond the classroom in the school’s organic garden. Working alongside the high school’s Tree Huggers Club, students explored how regenerative agriculture connects to the real-world concepts they study in class.
Through planting, soil observation and garden maintenance, the class and club members examined how sustainable farming practices help restore ecosystems, support local food systems and reduce environmental impact. The experience brought key AP Human Geography themes — including land use, human-environment interaction, sustainability and agricultural development — to life.
Students also had the opportunity to see how small-scale regenerative practices can contribute to healthier communities while strengthening their understanding of global issues through local action. The garden experience welcomed several first-time gardeners, who embraced the opportunity to get their hands in the soil and learn something new.
With seeds planted and excitement growing, students are eagerly looking forward to seeing what blooms from their hard work.
