Copiague’s Journalism Program Earns Honors At BASH Awards

On May 21, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School’s Journalism program, Copiague Voice News, attended the annual Broadcast Alliance for Senior High awards ceremony. Held at Hofstra University’s Lawrence Herbert School of Communication, this year’s event marked several milestones for the program, under the guidance of advisors Daniel Barresi and Heather Meidinger.
This year was the fifth time Copiague attended the ceremony and featured the largest group of student attendees to date. It was the second year Copiague submitted student work to be judged by industry professionals. It also marked the first time the district placed in the competition.
Copiague Voice News received two third place trophies for their submissions. The Spotlight Award for Best Human Interest Feature Package went to “Unsung Heroes: Food Service” by juniors Paola Gonzales and Katie Gonzalez. This segment highlighted the tireless commitment, hard work and professionalism of the district’s food service staff.
The Showcase Award for Best PSA went to “6:50 AM” by senior Oscar Velasquez and sophomore Isaiah Nunez. This PSA warned peers against the consequences of late-night phone use.
