Fourth graders in Mrs. Spizuco’s class at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School are learning all about fractions as tenths and hundredths. Upon completing their fractions unit, students had a strong understanding of what it means to have a part of a whole. Students immediately made the connection to decimals and had fun using their pretend money manipulatives and place value charts to practice showing different values of tenths and hundredths.  Students were given task cards with different expressions on them and had to create the values using dimes and pennies. Students were challenged to find more than one way to get the total value and used math talk to justify their thinking in their math groups.
