Copiague Students Come Together to Construct Owl Boxes
Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School and Copiague Middle School students recently learned about keeping birds of prey safe on Long Island thanks to special visits from Western Suffolk BOCES and Quogue Wildlife Refuge.
Experts from the two community organizations visited with members from the high school and middle school’s Makerspace Clubs, SOUL Community Outreach and middle school Tech Club afterschool on Feb. 25 and 26. They spoke to students about the Eastern screech owl, red-tailed hawk and the red-faced owl to deepen their understanding of local birds of prey.
Following the presentation, students constructed owl boxes to provide shelter for one of Long Island’s native owl species, the Eastern screech owl. The boxes will be donated to local organizations.
