Extreme Weather Meets Informational Writing In Fourth Grade

Fourth grade students at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School recently showcased their learning through the creation of an extreme weather brochure project, demonstrating their understanding of the five main informational text structures.
Using description, students explained the conditions of various extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards and heat waves. Through sequence, they outlined the steps of how these events form and what actions people should take during an emergency. With compare and contrast, students highlighted similarities and differences between different types of extreme weather.
Fourth graders also applied problem and solution by identifying challenges caused by extreme weather, exploring why these events occur and proposing ways people can stay safe. Finally, through cause and effect, they explored the reasons these weather events happen and examined their impact on people, communities and the environment.
This cross-curricular project strengthened students’ reading and writing skills while deepening their understanding of science concepts, allowing them to apply classroom learning in a meaningful and creative way.
