Hands-On Math Lessons Take Shape

Ms. Jaacks’ and Ms. Nunn’s fifth grade classes at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School are diving into their math curriculum this year by exploring the concept of volume. To understand volume as an attribute of solid figures, students worked with unit cubes to create rectangular prisms based on prompts.
The hands-on activity allowed students to visualize and construct three-dimensional figures while strengthening their understanding of how volume is measured. By building models themselves, students learned about the relationship between length, width and height and how these dimensions come together to form a prism.
The engaging lesson not only made abstract concepts more concrete but also encouraged problem-solving, collaboration and mathematical reasoning — skills that will support students throughout the year.
