Three seniors from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School recently earned their Gold Awards, the highest achievement within the Girl Scouts of the USA which consists of 80 hours of community service. Emily Newman, Annamaria Pepe and Theresa Soraire are all members of Troop 1052.

The 12th graders have been in the same troop since first grade. They said while many members of the troop have come and gone through the years, the three stayed consistent, creating a special bond. For her project, Emily created and compiled care packages for children in the NICU at Good Samaritan Hospital. Annamaria knitted hats and created care packages for breast cancer patients, which were donated to the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition. Theresa created a recipe book of safe foods for those suffering from eosinophilic esophagitis.

All three students had some connection to their Gold Award projects. Their names are now engraved on a plaque that hangs in the high school’s hallway.
