Copiague Middle School held its first Civics Fair on May 11 in the school’s library. The fair showcased the culminating work of students’ Capstone Civics projects developed throughout the year.

Each of the seventh grade social studies teachers selected students to display their projects during the fair. After choosing an issue to explore, students worked in groups to conduct research, interviews and polls. They then presented that research, along with solutions and reflections, to the judges at the fair. Advanced Placement government students from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School served as judges for the 13 different projects on display.

Students explored civic issues such as pollution, recycling, dress codes, mental health and bullying. The winning team included Dylan Argueta, Kellyn Amador, Yeslyn Canales and Brandon Jessup.
