The Performing Arts

Secondary

All students in Copiague grades 6-12 can further their performing abilities and opportunities.  Students enrolled at the Middle School receive General Music instruction every other day for half a year in 6th, 7th and 8th grades.

At the secondary level, the Performing Arts program is designed to refine the development of students' skills in addition to opportunities to create, perform, and respond to music. The Performing Arts develops students who are confident performers and imaginative and critical thinkers who are capable of interpreting and communicating the aesthetic qualities of music. It is our goal to develop students to become knowledgeable patrons of music. Students become empowered to bring the intrinsic values of music into their adult lives and when appropriate, receive the direction and insight to pursuing a career in the performing arts.

Performing students are placed into ensembles by either their grade in school or ability. In the Choral program during the day, students either participate in the 6th Grade Chorus, Choir, or Chorale.  Instrumental students participate in either the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, or Symphonic Winds.  As in elementary school, instrumental students receive small lesson instruction once a week, through a rotating schedule.

Beyond the school day, students have the opportunity to join the select ensembles of Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble, or Chamber singers.  Additionally, the middle School stages an annual musical production which many students participate in at varying levels.  We are proud that many students continue with NYSSMA Solo Festival participation as well as annually having ensembles represent Copiague at the NYSSMA Majors Festival each spring.  Each year, there is a strong representation of Middle School students at the annual All County Festivals.

The middle school participates in Winter and Spring Concerts, the Fine Arts Festival, Memorial Day and N. Amityville Day Parades, and enhance various building events throughout the year.

In the high school, students are placed into performing groups by their ability and teacher recommendation.  In the Choral program during the day, students either participate in the Women’s Chorus, Mixed Chorus, or Concert Choir.  Instrumental students participate in either the Concert Band or Wind Ensemble.  As throughout their training, instrumental students receive small lesson instruction once a week through a rotating schedule.  Many students participate at the highest levels for both choral and instrumental music at the annual NYSSMA Solo Festival as well as annually having ensembles represent Copiague at the NYSSMA Majors Festival each Spring.  The high school has a strong record for students selected to honor ensembles including All County, All State, All Eastern and All National.
In addition to performing ensembles, the high school offers 2 additional courses that meet daily throughout the year: Music Theory and Music of the 20th Century.

Beyond the school day at the high school many high caliber ensembles are available to students. We host a competitive Marching Band, Madrigal Singers, Jazz Band, Pit Orchestra, and a large scale annual Musical Production.
Our high school is proud to host an active chapter of the National Tri-M Music Honor Society that lends its talent and support at events throughout the year.
