Fifth graders from Susan E. Wiley Elementary School showed their appreciation for veterans by honoring them in a Veterans Day ceremony held at the school on Nov. 13.
The fifth graders paraded into the gymnasium waving their flags. Holding up signage that spelled the word veteran, the students read an acrostic poem that honored their heroes. The band ensemble – including a solo trumpet performance of “Taps” – featured songs that paid tribute to veterans.
Invited veterans – including Melissa Castillo Espinosa (Army), Alfred Esposito Jr. (Air Force), Adrian Gates (Marines), Ernest Cilenti (Air Force), Thomas Skladel (Air Force), Michael Vento (Army) and Jesus Roberto Mangari (Army) – each spoke about their military experience and shared some of their most memorable moments. Most of the speakers had some connection to the Susan E. Wiley students.
To conclude the ceremony, Susan E. Wiley Elementary School Principal Cynthia Florio presented the veterans will certificates of honor.
