Shadows Show Off STEM Sundials

Students in Carly Lopez’s class at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School recently participated in a STEM activity during the elementary summer school program. Using various materials of their choice – which included a paper plate and stick – the students engineered their own sundials that tell time. To test their creations, the students went outdoors to see if they cast a shadow on the dials. They positioned the sundials to show the correct time, left them outside in the set spots, and returned an hour later to see if the shadows had changed. An hour later, the times were correct.
