Rebholz named to Athletic Hall of Fame

Copiague Middle School physical education teacher and Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School varsity basketball coach Stephen Rebholz was recently inducted into the Farmingdale State College Athletics Hall of Fame.

Mr. Rebholz was a two-year starter and captain of the men’s basketball team at Farmingdale State College from 1983-1985. In his sophomore season, the team went 30-3. He led Region XV in field goal percentage and was ranked second in the nation.

After graduating from Farmingdale, Mr. Rebholz played two years on a full scholarship at Hofstra, where he still ranks second in best field goal percentage. He was presented with the Hempstead Mayor’s Trophy for a senior player who exemplifies fair play and good sportsmanship. He was also named to the All-Conference Team. After graduating from Hofstra, Mr. Rebholz was a first round draft pick for the Long Island Surf of the USBL and the first pick of the second round draft by the Wisconsin La Crosse Catbirds of the CBA.

Mr. Rebholz earned his master’s degree and began teaching physical education in Copiague. For the past 18 years, he has coached the varsity boys basketball team and achieved his 200th career win in 2015. Mr. Rebholz has been named Coach of the Year numerous times, and his teams have won eight league titles, three Suffolk County titles and one Long Island championship.
