Mrs. Mullins’ third grade class at Great Neck Road Elementary School celebrated MAR10 Day (Mario Day) on March 10 with a special project. The students learned how to find the area of irregular shapes using square units. First, they were given a pixel art grid illustration of the Super Mario character. The students applied a variety of math strategies and conducted math conversations with their team to determine the area of each part of Mario’s character. The students worked together in teams to build a large scale model of Mario using the correct number of square units. Students really enjoyed problem solving and working cooperatively to recreate their “Mario Masterpiece.”
