Incoming seniors at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School will have a head start on the college admissions process thanks to a summer college admissions boot camp held at the high school. Two different sessions of the boot camp – one in July and one in August – ran for four days for three hours per day.

Facilitated by English chairperson Meredith Wanzer, the college admissions boot camp helped students prep for what they can expect during the admissions process in the upcoming months. The students began the program with creative writing and reflections, and a self-exploration journey, learning about their values and what they want from life.

Ms. Wanzer guided the students through the college resume writing process and helped them create “brag sheets” to give to teachers when writing their specific letters of recommendation. Using Google Classroom, students received feedback and recommendations on their resumes.

Students worked on their college essays and used Big Future on the College Board website to help with their planning. Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School guidance counselor Brittany Tilinghast and college and career counselor Brianne Arthur visited with the students to talk about the college application process and answer questions and concerns.
