Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School paid tribute to the 20th anniversary of Sept. 11 with a memorial in the front entrance of the school. In remembrance of those who lost their lives, the display featured an iron cross from the World Trade Center and New York City Police Department and New York City Fire Department gear. Two helmets – 161 from the Lindenhurst Fire Department and 523 from the Copiague Department – were also on display. The American flag at the memorial flew on Sept. 11, 2001 at Assistant Principal Jonathan Cutolo’s firehouse. Two floral arrangements were donated by members of the school’s administrative team.
