Congratulations to Walter G. O'Connell Copiague High School senior Malik Leftenant on winning the New York State Wrestling Championship at the Time Union Center in Albany. With a 6-2 deficit, Malik came back for an 8-6 win over the top seed to capture the title in his 220-pound weight class. Malik fell behind after he missed a headlock in the second period. He continued to push throughout the third period and gained a go-ahead takedown with 38 seconds left.

Malik improved to 40-5 and became the second state champion in school history. Copiague's only state champion came in 1993 when junior Liston Brown won the 119-pound weight class.
