Welcome to the Science and Health Departments! Our 6th, 7th and 8th grade science curriculum at Copiague Middle School incorporates Earth, Physical and Life Science in an inquiry-based, constructivist approach to learning. Our ultimate goal is to see all of our students learn beyond the content of the Next Generation Science Standards and New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) that were recently adopted by New York State. Our three-year approach spirals our curriculum to maximize efficiency and to ensure success on the New York State Intermediate Level Science Exam. We believe that all students need to be science-literate and be able to understand the nuances of our ever-changing world. All eighth grade students are responsible for taking either the Earth Science Regents, Living Environment Regents (if the student is in the accelerated program) or the Intermediate Level Science (ILS) Examination in the eighth grade. The ILS exam is given in two parts: A performance portion given during the month of May, and an extended-written portion administered in June. The 8th grade science accelerated student takes either the New York State Regents Level Earth Science class or the Living Environment class. Each student enrolled is expected to take the Regents Exam in Earth Science or Living Environment in June. Students in this class meet for an extra period every-other day in order to complete the lab requirement. Successful completion of this class and Regents Exam entitles the student to one full high school credit. All 8th grade students are required to take one-half year of Health. The course is designed to promote good health among all citizens. Emphasis is placed on issues relating to promoting mental and physical well-being, safety, violence prevention and nutrition. All of us hardworking and dedicated teachers of the department pride ourselves on our accessibility to the community and for developing thinking strategies within our classrooms. These strategies are not only used to aid our students in the classroom, but to prepare our students for life beyond school.
