Mathematics

Thank you for visiting the Copiague Middle School’s Mathematics Department

Departmental Vision Statement:
We envision our department as a community of learners where all members, students, staff and parents, are actively engaged in the educational process. Staff and parents are focused on empowering all students with the mathematical proficiency that will enable them to further their educational goals and become active, responsible, and positively contributing members of society. Students will develop important decision-making, critical thinking, and technological skills, and the ability to communicate mathematical understandings effectively. All stake-holders will share accountability for creating a positive and supportive educational environment, and for achieving successful student outcomes.

Departmental Mission Statement:
We are a diverse, collaborative department dedicated to achieving high standards of academic excellence for all of our students. Through high quality standards-driven instruction and a nurturing environment, we will develop in our students the degree of mathematical proficiency that is necessary to succeed in the most competitive of professions. We will create a community of mathematically adept life-long learners.

Super Tutors

The Math Department is pleased to announce the addition of Super Tutors to the Peer Tutoring program. Super Tutors are 8th grade students who have proven to have an extensive math background. These dedicated students tutor 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in the after-school Math Peer Tutoring Program that occurs within the Homework Center. The Super Tutor designation is assigned to students who are also able to tutor their peers in the 8th grade Accelerated Algebra curriculum and provide additional support to other tutors as they assist students with their math. Dr. Murray is proud to appoint the following Super Tutors (front row - from left to right): Christopher Brito; Victoria Wheby; Andrew Bena; Jordana Jagnarine; (back row - from left to right) Philip Popielarz; Yalerin Marine Salazar; Matthew Robles; and Alana Cambridge (not pictured).

Long Island Math Fair 2020

Students are given the challenge of writing an 8-12 page math research paper on a math topic of their choice. Once the paper was accepted, they took the challenge of translating their written paper into an oral presentation. Students were required to explain their paper, but most importantly show their mastery of the mathematical concepts they learned. Normally, they are then given the opportunity to present their paper at Hofstra University, but due to the pandemic, this year they were just judged on their paper alone. Our students did a phenomenal job and were rewarded for their efforts with distinction.

Dr. Murray, Mr. Temme, and the CMS Mathematics Department are very proud of all students who conducted math research and those who were selected to present their papers. The following students earned awards:

Shenn Barredo – gold (8th grade); Giselle Peralta – gold (8th grade); Jonathan Singh – gold (8th grade); Kemmora Simmons – silver (8th grade); TheresaSoraire – bronze (8th grade); Maya Tyszko – bronze (7th grade).
