Apple Activities Plant the Learning Seed

Kindergartners in Maritza Benavides’ class at Deauville Gardens East spend the first few weeks in October engaged in a variety of apple activities.

The cross-curricular lessons planned throughout the weeks also incorporated English, math, art and music. Starting with reading books about apples and learning about the different varieties, the students then tasted different types of apples and graphed their favorite picks.

Using apple halves, students dipped them in different colors to create their own apple art patterns. Sorting, cutting and making an apple alphabet helped reinforce skills they had learned at the start of the school year.

As one of their culminating activities in the unit, the kindergartners made their own applesauce, dicing the apples, adding the necessary spices and tasting their homemade treat.
