HS Honors Spring Student-Athletes

Student-athletes from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School were honored at the school’s Spring Sports Awards Night on May 23. The evening, sponsored by the Booster Club, was filled with praise for members of the track, baseball, softball and lacrosse teams for their commitment to teamwork, school and themselves.

In addition to honoring the most valuable and most improved players, as well as giving out the coach’s award for each team, three special memorial awards were presented to student-athletes for boys lacrosse and baseball. The Jared J. Pennington Memorial Lacrosse Award was given to Sean Walsh; Victor Gamarra was the recipient of the Sean Ryan Noonan Memorial Lacrosse Award and Ethan Taveras received the Daniel O’Connell Memorial Baseball Award.

The Section XI Gold Key Award, the highest Section XI honor that an athlete can receive, and Golden Eagle Awards were also presented at the ceremony. The Gold Key is awarded to student-athletes who letter in eight junior varsity or varsity seasons in grades 10-12. This year’s recipients were Nickeela Austin (soccer, winter track, spring track), Asante Carroll (soccer, basketball, winter track, spring track), Gernelle Forrest (field hockey, winter track, spring track), Joshua Hitzel (cross-country, winter track, spring track), Peter McKenzie (football, basketball, winter track, spring track), Brian Nunez (cross-country, football, winter track, spring track), Erick Rivera (cross-country, winter track, spring track) and Marcus Weeks (football, winter track, baseball, spring track).

The Golden Eagle Award is given to a student on each team who had the highest cumulative grade-point average for the season. For the spring season, Mikayla Angel (girls track), Ashley Hudson (girls lacrosse), Gregory Morgan (boys lacrosse), Ethan Taveras (baseball), Marcus Weeks (boys track) and Sofie Wilson (softball) received the Golden Eagle.
