Fifth graders in Ms. Jaacks’ and Ms. Ozelsancak’s class at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School recently completed salty science experiments. To determine if salt dissolved in water was a chemical or physical change, the students wrote on black paper using salt. After making their predications, the fifth graders discovered that since the water evaporated and the salt was left on the paper, it was a physical change.

Student-artists at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School learned a new technique during a recent lesson in Ms. McLaughlin’s art classes. As part of a lesson on the printing process, the students learned how to create jelly plate prints which uses a gelatin-based ink. Following a lesson on the tools used during the printing process, the students rolled out the ink on the plates to create different textures and lines. In a subsequent lesson, students used a second layer of ink and spring-themed stencils to create negative space on the prints.

Fourth grade students in Mrs. Cranmer’s class at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School have recently discovered that math comes in all shapes and sizes. With protractors in hands, the students have been working on their geometry unit learning different types of lines and angles. They enjoyed drawing and measuring angles using protractors, finding the measure of an unknown angle and learning how to find complementary and supplementary angles. Their hard work is on display in the hallway bulletin board.

Fourth graders at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School are blooming poets. In celebration of National Poetry Month, they recently completed their English language arts unit on poetry. Students learned about different styles and elements of poetry and how to incorporate figurative language into their writing. They then wrote and published their favorite pieces at the end of the unit. The fourth grade classes celebrated their creativity by having a publishing party, reading aloud their pieces to the class.

Students in Mrs. McLaughlin’s sewing club at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School have been working hard on designing and creating their own plushies. These artists drew their own designs, cut their felts, and assembled their piece using three different types of stitches.
